  • Top Ten Oddball Tax Deductions

With just 27 days left to do your taxes, enjoy a laugh over these 10 oddball deductions.

    1. Pet Food

A couple who owned a junkyard were allowed to write off the cost of cat food they set out to attract wild cats. The feral felines did more than just eat. They also took care of snakes and rats on the property, making the place safer for customers. When the case reached the Tax Court, IRS lawyers conceded that the cost was deductible.

    2. Moving the Family Pet

If you are changing jobs and meet a couple of tests, you can deduct your moving expenses -- including the cost of moving your dog, cat or other pet from your old residence to your new home. Your pet -- be it a Pekingese or a python -- is treated the same as your other personal effects.

    3. A Trip to Bermuda

This island is more than just a scenic place to visit. It's a great place to schedule a tax write-off because business conventions held in Bermuda are deductible without having to show that there was a special reason for the meeting to be held there. That's a sweet perk.

Other countries in the Caribbean region qualify, too, including Barbados, Costa Rica, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Saint Lucia plus Trinidad and Tobago. Meetings held in Canada, Mexico and all U.S. possessions also receive this favorable tax treatment.

Attend a convention in Paris or Rome or Beijing, though, and there's no deduction unless you can show it made as much sense to travel abroad as to head to Pittsburgh.

    4. Body Oil

A pro bodybuilder used body oil to make his muscles glisten in the lights during his competitions. The Tax Court ruled that he could deduct the cost of the oil as a business expense. However, the Court frowned on his deductions for buffalo meat and special vitamin supplements to enhance strength and muscle development.

    5. A Private Airplane

Rather than drive five to seven hours to check on their rental condo or be tied to the only daily commercial flight available, a couple bought their own plane. The Tax Court allowed them to deduct their condo-related trips on the aircraft, including the cost of fuel and depreciation for the portion of time used for business-related purposes, even though these costs increased their overall rental loss.

    6. Babysitting Fees

Fees paid to a sitter to enable a mother to get out of the house and do volunteer work for a charity are deductible as charitable contributions, according to the Tax Court, even though the money didn't go directly to the charity.

    7. Breast Augmentation

To get more tips, a stripper with the stage name "Chesty Love" decided to get breast implants to make her a size 56-FF. A Tax Court judge allowed Chesty to write off the cost of her operation, equating her new, um, assets to a stage prop.

Alas, the operation proved to be a problem for Chesty. She later tripped and ruptured one of her implants.

    8. Landscaping

A sole proprietor who regularly met clients in an office in his home can deduct part of the costs of landscaping the property. The deductible portion is based on the percentage of the home that is used for business, according to the Tax Court. The Court also allowed a deduction for part of the costs of lawn care and driveway repairs.

    9. Free Beer

In a novel promotion, a gas station owner gave his customers free beer in lieu of trading stamps. Proving that sometimes beer and gasoline do mix, the Tax Court allowed the write-off as a business expense.

    10. Swimming Pool

A taxpayer with emphysema put in a pool after his doctor told him to develop an exercise regime. He swam in it twice a day and improved his breathing capacity. Turns out he swam in the pool more than his family did.

The Tax Court allowed him to deduct the cost of the pool (to the extent the cost exceeded its added value to the property) as a medical expense because its primary purpose was for medical care. Also, the cost of heating the pool, pool chemicals and a proportionate part of insuring the pool area are treated as medical expenses.

7 Reasons to Drink Green Tea

The steady stream of good news about green tea is getting so hard to ignore that even java junkies are beginning to sip mugs of the deceptively delicate brew. You'd think the daily dose of disease-fighting, inflammation-squelching antioxidants - long linked with heart protection - would be enough incentive, but wait, there's more! Lots more.

    CUT YOUR CANCER RISK
Several polyphenols - the potent antioxidants green tea's famous for - seem to help keep cancer cells from gaining a foothold in the body, by discouraging their growth and then squelching the creation of new blood vessels that tumors need to thrive. Study after study has found that people who regularly drink green tea reduce their risk of breast, stomach, esophagus, colon, and/or prostate cancer.

    SOOTHE YOUR SKIN
Got a cut, scrape, or bite, and a little leftover green tea? Soak a cotton pad in it. The tea is a natural antiseptic that relieves itching and swelling. Try it on inflamed breakouts and blemishes, sunburns, even puffy eyelids. And that's not all. In the lab, green tea helps block sun-triggered skin cancer, whether you drink it or apply it directly to the skin - which is why you're seeing green tea in more and more sunscreens and moisturizers.

    STEADY YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
Having healthy blood pressure - meaning below 120/80 - is one thing. Keeping it that way is quite another. But people who sip just half a cup a day are almost 50 percent less likely to wind up with hypertension than non-drinkers. Credit goes to the polyphenols again (especially one known as ECGC). They help keep blood vessels from contracting and raising blood pressure.

PROTECT YOUR MEMORY, OR YOUR MOM'S
Green tea may also keep the brain from turning fuzzy. Getting-up-there adults who drink at least two cups a day are half as likely to develop cognitive problems as those who drink less. Why? It appears that the tea's big dose of antioxidants fights the free-radical damage to brain nerves seen in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

    STAY YOUNG
The younger and healthier your arteries are, the younger and healthier you are. So fight plaque build-up in your blood vessels, which ups the risk of heart disease and stroke, adds years to your biological age (or RealAge), and saps your energy too. How much green tea does this vital job take? About 10 ounces a day, which also deters your body from absorbing artery-clogging fat and cholesterol.

    LOSE WEIGHT
Oh yeah, one more thing. Turns out that green tea speeds up your body's calorie-burning process. In the every-little-bit-counts department, this is good news!

  • Thoughts of My Grandparents:
When I was a little girl I used to spend most of my weekends with my Grandparents or, so I remember it to be.  My Grandfather Eric and Grandmother Rose would come by on Friday afternoons to pick me up.  I would be all ready and packed to go - constantly monitoring the front door so; I can seize the first glimpse of their car pulling up in front of the house.   With the first sight of them - I would ran out the door into their arms getting my missed hugs and kisses.  Of course like most young children at that time I got into trouble as well.  For example I was always fascinated by watching my Grandmother Rose used her sewing machine.  Whenever, she would be napping and I was up playing dollhouse I would find myself wondering around the machine...next I would be sitting on the chair...my little fingers putting some piece of cloth near under the needle and then my feet reaching for the peddle.  Of course, for the times I didn't get catch on the sewing machine - she somehow founded out I was playing with it.

Wanting to sleep late with it being the weekend - I expected to stay up late with her and Grandfather Eric, but My Grandmother would say, "Early to bed, early to rise makes a woman healthy, wealthy and wise."

    Present:
These past few days I can't seem to get enough sleep.  In the afternoons I tell myself I will be in bed by 9:30 PM - only to find myself in bed after 11:00 PM.  The truth is - I get very cranky when I need more sleep and it's time to get up.  I think I need to activate my Grandmother theory once again.

  • Have a great weekend everyone!
Leaving you with this to read (below).

    Title: Lost & Found
    Dedicated to my Angel Javon

    Little Girl Lost
Sat upon a rock with her hands covering her sobbing face.
As her tears escape the hide away of her face - it flows onto the dying roots of a Plant near, giving it life once again.

    Little Girl Lost
    Haunted by her childhood fears.
What to do - must she decide - for life now seems so unclear.
Be determine, be brave, and never forget her Mother's struggles to bring her of this age.

    Little Girl Lost
Wonder why her dad left her as a child.
She heard of his undying love for her, but yet never felt his present in her life.
    She continues to
speculate how to fill that void.

    Little Girl Lost
Is all grown up, given the light of her life "her child" she realizes..
The past must be set free.
Her present requires her full attention - promising to do so, she embrace her found Angel of New Beginnings!

  • Happy Valentine's Day!

    Only You

    Happy Valentine's Day!
Best wishes to everyone and their loved ones on this day.  Of course I can't do anything dramatically exciting, but please feel free to share your special plans in store for your Honey/Sweetheart.  Afterall, I am guessing my day will be: work from 9AM-5PM, a 45 minutes train ride to my car, pick my son up, drive home, quite dinner, shower and bedtime.  Which I might say, is something I absolutely look forward to at the end of a cold day.

    Healing Process
It's going to be two weeks on Friday since my foot surgery.  I am expected to have the stretches remove by then.  It still hurts periodically throughout the day.  My left foot seems to be worst at healing vs. my right foot.  Since the surgery I've been taking Ibuprofin once every 6 hours, and Vicodin once every 4 hours for the pain.  I absolutely dislike taking pills.  But in this case, dislike is not an option.

    Boots Shopping
Meanwhile, the very least of my concern is the stylist pair of boots provide by the doctor .  I have to wear these until further notice- i swear it makes me walk like a penguin.  And, it goes with nothing and appears to make me look like i have two left feet.  This weekend, I took the brave challenge without my doctor's consent and went boots shopping.  Aw, man!  What a bad idea.  I barely manage to get my feet within the opening of the boots and painfully realized I need to get my butt home, take my painkillers and elevate my feet.

Enjoy the rest of your day...until next time.

  • Happy 2007 Everyone!

Since my last detailed Blog I've:
    1.
Went to Guyana (Homeland) for three weeks during July, 2006 for a funeral.
    2.       Started a new relationship since July 28th - Present.
    3.       Javon started Kindergarten in September, 2006 - Present.
    4.       Moved into my new apartment September, 2006 - Present.
    5.       Inner struggles for carelessness, uncertainties, etc.
    6.       Foot surgery - minor - recent.

Then there are the little pieces of details that fits into my brief list above - which I will share another time.

    Super Bowl:
How about that Super Bowl last weekend?  The Bears started off with a homerun but, the Colts ended with the win.  Altogether I think it was a good game despite the bad weather.

    Halftime:
I am not a Prince fan so the halftime was boring for me.

    New Commercials:
My two favorites were the beer commercial where they kept slapping each other and, the GM commercial with the robot having a bad dream.

    Questions:
    1. Did you have a favorite commercial?
    2.
What are your thoughts about the Super Bowl and the halftime entertainment?

  • Hi Everyone...

Hope you and your families have been well.  As for myself I am doing okay.  Work have been busy on and off lately.  Personal life have had it's major ups and downs.  What's news since the last time I entered a weblog?

    1. I finally got my Driver's License - since last year forgot to mention it.
    2. On Friday, April 28 I finally became an American Citizen - something I've been putting off since 1996.
    3. On May 24th I am leaving for my second trip to Las Vegas - after going there for the first time five years ago
    4. I am in the process of finalizing a land/property purchase back in my homeland Guyana - not completed yet, but it's still great news to share.

It's really strange how much little changes can make a big difference in one's life.  Example, for the life of me I've been contemplating getting my Driver's License - now that I have it - I don't understand why I put it off for so long.  Driving is very NECESSARY.

Is there something you've been putting off or were putting off? If so, why or what was the outcome?  Please don't be shy - share  your stories.
